It's finally been removed from the Dodge family photo.
I'd say good riddance like most of you will, but I always liked the thing.
Rest in peace you product of a cost-cutting committee whose only savior were the Italians. But it was too little, too late for you. Your parents have moved on to bigger and better things.
Much better, may I add.

The incentives also cannibalized Dart sales. Which is miles better than the worst mid-sized sedan money could buy.

The worst still wasn't bad.

D: That was a decent post-Fiat one. They could've at least killed a Cerberus one.

I rented one once. If I never drive one again I'll be happy.

The rental ones probably were terrible with that horrible 2.4L I4 and 4-speed auto.

I still like the Avenger better than the Dodge Journey.

This is why it was killed. The Avenger wasn't built to be driven - it was built to torment souls.

Actually just had one of these for the thanksgiving weekend. I'm surprised if the 4 cylinder has the 180 hp that's advertised, honestly felt more like 100. Not only that, the interior work is TERRIBLE. Defroster cuts out after 5 mins, and doesn't work on the front windshield. The side mirror controls were installed backwards and upside down, aka, to control the right mirror, it has to be clicked on the indicated left side and vice versa. Push forward the windows face farther down, vice versa for pushing back. Push left, window goes right etc. Quite a POS. Also visibility suxxxxx. The B pillar is much larger than necessary.

But with a dozen options better it left little to no reason to actually buy one.

Then why is the Journey still in the picture?
![]() 11/29/2014 at 01:16 |

One reason: Journey SXT. It's the cheapest Journey (~$25,940) with the option of the 290 hp Pentastar V6 in your choice of FWD or AWD. It's the exact same V6 that in Challenger trim makes 305 hp.

Yeah, but that engine was also available in the much lighter Avenger. With the same quality interior.

Same as Journey stands:
While it wasn't great, they did update it.

Alright. Let's see if Dart and Charger sales come up now because of the absence of the Avenger. This is the first big shift for the Dodge brand away from a line of mainstream cars. Killing off the Caravan will be next.
Also, I'm fairly certain that the new 200, while it's eclipsing the sales totals of the old shitbox 200, it hasn't outsold the Avenger/old 200 combined. So Chrysler's midsize market share is still dropping.
That said, the new 200 is probably selling to far more retail customers than before. So perhaps it is holding Chrysler's retail market share over the segment. At any rate, the FCA's plans for Dodge are quite unconventional. I hope they work.

I hope you don't mind if I *borrow* that picture.

Rental car company forced one on me back in 2004, long weekend trip to Montauk to figure out why my ex was gone - that car was the very definition of beige and bland. Should have treated myself to a Mustang convertible.

From personal experience - yes, they were.

I will concede it was a good looking car though. Handsome.

Yes, I had one. In my experience all American hire cars have this combination. I thought it was fine, in a kind of hire car way.

The Avenger is dead you say? This Avenger is sad, but still alive.
